Food for thought: Eating for exercise

With the cooler weather, many of us are getting outside and doing some exercise. Over the past several years, there has been a drastic participation increase in events such as 5Ks, half-marathons and marathons. Women, in particular, are participating in these events more than ever. It is important to maintain adequate nutrition intake when preparing and training for competitive events or just increasing your physical activity. Here are a few tips to help you eat for exercise:

1.   Make sure you are getting adequate, but not too much, protein. Protein provides amino acids to build and repair muscles.

2.   Get plenty of quality carbohydrates. Carbohydrates provide energy. Look for complex carbohydrates such as whole grains.

3.   Focus on hydration. Dehydration can be one of the biggest contributor to fatigue when training or racing.

4.   After exercise or events, make sure you take time to recuperate. Many times people are not too hungry after strenuous physical activity or events. Low-fat chocolate milk or water and protein bars are helpful after extended periods of exercise.
Words of Wisdom;
"Time flies. It's up to you to be the navigator."
"The only normal people are the ones that you don't know very well.""Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
"If you can't get a compliment any other way, pay yourself one."
"Time flies. It's up to you to be the navigator."
"True humor is fun - it does not put down, kid, or mock. It makes people feel wonderful, not separate, different, and cut off. True humor has beneath it the understanding that we are all in this together."
