Food for Thought : Coupons

Coupons are one way consumers can save money on groceries . However they may not always be the best way to reduce costs or provide healthful foods for your family . Also , coupons are frequently offered for convenience of processed foods , which are normally high in sodium , fat and preservatives  . Hear are a few tips to make sure you are getting a good financial and healthful bargain :

1 . Before you clip , evaluate the product . Is this a product you normally buy ? Or is it an opportunity  to get your family to try a new food or recipe ? If so , then the coupon may be worth clipping .

2. Just because an item is a good buy does not mean it is good for you . Make sure you check the Nutrition Facts Label and compare the product with similar products .

3 . Compare the savings price to the store brand . Many times the store brand is a better bargain than the national brand with a coupon .
Words of Wisdom :
The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.

"Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first."

Humor is most powerful thing that uses laughter as it base to chase your blues away.

What matters is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight of the dog.

The difficult thing about children is that they come with no instructions. You pretty well have to assemble them on your own.

Old people like to give good advice, since they can no longer set bad examples

I must be getting absent-minded. Whenever I complain that things aren't what they used to be, I always forget to include myself.

What a great idea to inform people to use coupons and to use them wisely . I use coupons and put the saving in a large pickle jar . For Christmas I cash it in and buy presents , what a surprise , I saved 100s of dollars and now most everyone here is doing it .
    Great job .

    1. My dear Joanna ,
I got the idea from you . I told Harvey it would be great to start the seniors couponing and how you would put the difference in your 5 gallon pickle jar . Joanna I was surprise how much you saved at the end of the year .
Now that is my next project with the seniors .
I will speak to them at the next Nanook meeting when we return from Reno .
Thank you for the encouragement .

Now I know why Harvey said to clip coupons for things I use from the store . The kids told me you and Harvey give them your coupons they get your stuff and bring it to you . I agree with Mae , you two guys is something else . Love your quotes and they make me laugh out loud .
Keep up the good work .
PS: Do you have any idea when you are leaving , Harvey don't know . Jean

  5. My dear Jean ,
It is an idea Harvey and I came up with from Joanna . I asked her how much saved and I was surprise when she showed me her weekly saving and it really mounted up monthly .
Joanna showed me on the grocery receipts where to look , so I get our grocery receipts and put the money in a pickle jar , I ask Nita to saved all their pickle jars so I can give them to the seniors , they will have the money to use when they need it or put it in the bank .
Glad I am spreading some sunshine .

We will leave on the 21st this month .

  6. Hi HB,
What a great project for your seniors. It can be a big help for people on a fixed income. They just have to know where to look for coupons and they have to stick with it for it to pay off in the long term.
A couple of your wise sayings really had me laughing this week but there is always a nugget of truth in them

  7. Hello little Butterfly ,
Couponing is good for everyone , fixed income or not , why give away money when you can save some of it with just a few minutes of time .
I once saw a lady but over $50.00 groceries and only paid $13.00 for them
Here , we get all types of coupons in the Sunday Paper and on Tuesdays we get the grocery sale paper with sales and coupons . The grocery sale starts on Wednesdays and ends on the following Tuesday . With the economy like it is now , everyone needs to save .
I am so glad that they make you laugh . Harvey Jean said they made her laugh out loud . That must mean I am doing my job .
