Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman's body was discovered at the Sandringham country estate of Queen Elizabeth over New Year' weekend .
A civilian spotted the remains in a wooded area on Sunday , after the Queen and Prince Phillip attended a nearby church service , his first public appearence since a Christmas heart scare.
The royals spend the holidays at Sandringham every year .
"We are at the very early stages of the investigation , and it could be a complex inquiry ," said Detective Chief Inspector Jes Fry , adding , "The body had been there for some time ."
Fry continued , "The circumstances suggest this is a murder case , and we are looking at missing persons reports and cold cases , both locally and nationwide .
Authorities informed the royal family of the discovery on Monday.
They have yet to comment publicly.
